r1011034.jpg
It’s a good move that we chose to drive our car…otherwise we’ll be the one who’s caged and watched by the animals haha

r1011049.jpg
It’s amazing to have close proximity with animals. I look forward to a real African tour someday

Then we headed over to Beppu for their famous hell hotspring (別府地獄). They are called hell because they are too hot for human consumption (90c or above). The 8 different hells have different texture and style so it’s rather interesting to check them out. But I would recommend just to check out the first four (海地獄、鬼石坊主地獄、山地獄、かまど地獄) as the last few were kinda boring.

Waited 20min to see the burst @ 龍捲地獄. Mom had a rather funny accident there which I got the photo to laugh at for the rest of my life. But won’t go into much detail or she’ll kill me. Tell you next time I see you in person ^^

r1011189.jpg

r1011207.jpg
Heading back to Hakata. Love the gps and mom was trying to document me speeding :P Who doesn’t.

Kyushu 九州- Day 1

Decided to take mom for a short trip to Japan because I suddenly realized that the European trip we went during my uni year was the last time we really travelled together (ok, london & vancouver don’t count) Anyway, I guess I just wanted to proactively do something with mom at times (yet to think about what to do with dad tho haha)

Even though I went to Fukuoka early this year because of Cody, I didn’t really get a chance to see the place in details. Therefore, I did a very throughout research planning this trip point by point (usually when I travel I like going with the flow and decide on the spot on where about to go). It’s all worth it as mom really enjoyed it. She was saying that she finally experienced the real Japan without the pushy tour guide.

Hong Kong香港 > Hakata 博多> Yufuin 湯布院

Left Hong Kong on an 8:50am flight and arrived Hakata at 1pm.

r1010791.jpg
Start of the journey in our cool bB

r1010787.jpg
A stopover for quick ramen at 支那そば北熊. Taste was just so so but it’s on the way. I think I like udon more…

r1010794.jpg
After 1.5 hour of drive, we arrived the edge of Yufuin and saw this place with lots of local delicacy (sake, dried seafood, produce…) Love it~

r1010797.jpg
Arrived at our little onsen place – 旅の宿 ぽっぽ庵 and greeted by this nice gentleman~

r1010809.jpg
Our very own in-room onsen. You can open the screen door to absorb the earthy-ness from the outside…so so nice

r1010821.jpg
We immediately changed into the onsen wear and fool around in the room

r1010822.jpg
The country view outside was so peaceful. There was a railway at the distance and everytime a train passed by, the sound was actually very soothing.

r1010824.jpg
You can also make use of their communal onsen facility. Once you are in, you put the sign out and lock the door. It’s a perfect getaway place for couples I think (saw quite a few pairs passed by…you can smell the sweetness from them miles away haha)

r1010852.jpg
Our dinner was served in a private dinning room with a fireplace…so cozy and nice. And the food was excellent in term of presentation and taste…yummy!

r1010869.jpg
豐後牛 that melted in your mouth…hmmm!

r1010888.jpg
Our beds were setup during dinner. So comfy. So we spent the evening chatting, doing rounds of onsen

r1010896.jpg
Then mom drifted into slumberland in no time hahaha

Got some cookbooks at bargaining price on Queen’s Rd east…the betty crocker’s 1950 reprint is rather interesting. It has a statement like this:

We’re excited to bring this treasured first edition of Betty Crocker’s Cook Book. The recipes are exactly as they appear in the original cookbook to reflect the heritage of American cooking. Eating habits may have changed since 1950, but the fond memories of sharing delcious recipes from this cookbook remain the same.

Mom or Grandma may have used more salt, sugar and fat in her cooking than we do today, and some ingredients and food safety concerns have changed over the years. So you may want to try these recipes using today’s ingredients and methods.

Hmm…I thought it’s today’s eating habit that’s unhealthy?!
